At South St. Burger Co. every item on the menu is designed to be “Best in Category” – offering not only top quality ingredients, but the best taste as well. Our latest refresh of the South St. website helps the customer clearly understand this point of difference.

From naturally raised, 100% pure beef to fresh cut onion rings, serving real food with outstanding flavour is what sets South St. Burger Co. apart. To date, we have helped South St. launch 12 locations, and South St. Burger Co. is more focused than ever on ingredient quality, simple cooking methods, the customer experience and their obligation to operate responsibly and conscientiously. South St. Burger Co. is involved in each step of the process, from “farm to fork” to ensure that their mandate is fulfilled.

South St. Burger Co. believes that better beef really does make better burgers; that’s why they buy their beef from small co-op farms that practice conscientious and natural farming. The beef has no hormones, antibiotics, preservatives or filler. And, like the fries, these patties are fresh, not frozen. They are flame grilled and made to order giving them a juicy, home-made taste, and served on your choice of regular or whole wheat bun, which are baked locally and delivered daily. But it’s the company’s vast selection of toppings that truly makes it stand out. With a variety of real cheeses and over 25 free condiments, including unusual items like guacamole, wasabi mayo and mango chutney – your burger will be unique and outstanding.

For the complete South St. experience, add an order of New York Fries, signature poutine, or onion rings. All are hand made in-store from fresh ingredients and cooked in trans fat free sunflower oil. Hand-scooped milkshakes are made with premium ice cream from a local dairy. Side orders are treated with the same respect as the burger. Because of this, South St. Burger Co. believes it is unmatched in the Canadian burger business.

Telling customers about the food is only half the story.
When you eat at South St. Burger Co., you’ll get more than just good food — you’ll get a good feeling, too. Here’s a sample of the areas they impact:

They use 100% clean, renewable electricity for five of their stores from Bullfrog PowerTM, reducing their stores’ environmental impact.

Purchase local ingredients. Their beef, buns, potatoes, chicken, cheeses and ice cream, are all purchased locally; reducing their carbon footprint and supporting local farms and businesses.

Employ grill hoods with high technology heat exchange ventilation systems so their heating requirements are reduced by more than 300 cubic meters of gas per month, with a carbon savings of 6.84 tonnes per year, per store.

Use LED bulbs as 50% of their store lighting requirements, saving 4,400 KwH annually and reduces carbon emissions by 1 tonne, per store, per year.

Use environmentally friendly, non toxic cleaning products and post-consumer recycled paper products wherever possible and practical.

Changed to air-cooled ice makers from water-cooled ice makers eliminating 2,600 litres of water per day or 950,000 litres (950 m3) in a year, per unit.

Installed a solar-powered water heater and solar electric panels in 2 restaurants so far, with plans to add more.

South St. Burger Co. is committed to its support of both local and international charities and to continuing their efforts to reduce their footprint on the environment.

So while we have been busy designing their restaurants and shaping the customer experience, the folks at South St. have been working hard to deliver best in category food and limit their impact on the environment. Check it out at http://southstburger.com/.

There are many things to consider before launching a website, whether it’s your company’s first site, or a refresh. Of course, as developers, our list is considerably longer and more technical (as an example, see Dan Zambonini’s developer’s list here), but that doesn’t mean that you’re off the hook. On the contrary, there are several things you should be considering when it’s time to “hit the switch”. Here is the short list:

Know Your URL – it may sound trivial, but knowing your URL up front (before you even start development) can be important. Changing it at the last minute can cause all sorts of trouble, and trouble means unnecessarily spent dollars. Make sure your domain is registered and that you have all the credentials you need to make the necessary changes, especially when your changing developers/hosting.

Email – How do you access your email? Is it sitting on a web server in cyberspace, or hosted internally? Do you get it via POP? IMAP? Exchange? Knowing the answers to these questions and discussing them with your developer can eliminate mail downtime that can result from a new website launch.

Dot Your I’s – Has anyone proofed the content on your site? Launching without a thorough review of content is a dangerous propsition, which can result in embarassing situations when your visitors find those “minor” (or worse, major) mistakes.

Graphic Content – Do you own all of the graphics used on your new site? Often designers will use graphics downloaded from the web for concept, but these sometimes hang around until well into the development phase, and before you know it, you’re getting an cease and desist email from a photographer or illustrator. You are ultimately responsible for what appears on your site, so if you don’t know where images have come from, ask.

Test Functionality – Be sure to click and test every link on your site, and go through every multi-step process (registration, purchasing, etc.). Test what happens when things go the way they should, as well as what happens when a visitor does something unintended. You cant possibly test every possible configuration and possibility, but the more you test, the less likely you will have to spend time dealing with the consequences when something doesn’t go right.

Have a Launch Strategy – launching a new site is the result of a significant investment on your part, both financially and time-wise. Supporting your launch with some good old-fashioned PR work can make the splash you want and get your site on the radar. Besides, having some links to your new site from other reputable sources will get you to the top of Google much faster.

This is by no means a comprehensive list, but paying attention to these six items should lead to a more satisfying, successful launch for all parties.

Jump Branding & Design Inc. and the Hannam Fertility Centre are proud to announce the birth of their two new websites on Friday, September 6, 2008. The beautiful new www.hannamfertility.com was born first and weighed in at 24 pages and 27.8MB, and her little brother www.fertility.ca came into the world shortly after at 6 posts (but growing fast!) and 22.4MB. Everyone is healthy and doing well, and we at Jump want to wish HFC all the best with the newest additions to their family.

Jump Branding & Design Inc. is proud to announce the launch of the new online presence for Chorizo Mexican Grill. Chorizo has been crafting burritos, fajitas, and other traditional Mexican fare since 2005, and is proud to use only fresh ingredients in its menu offering. Chorizo partnered with Jump in 2007 as they were expanding from a single store location to their second store, and Jump was involved in the development of conceptual drawings and in-store signage for the new store, as well as packaging and brand direction for both stores. Jump has helped Chorizo Mexican Grill to develop a brand personality that is in keeping with the style of company owner Frank DeMedeiros. The Chorizo website is an extension of that brand personality, and provides Chorizo with the opportunity to communicate online to a rapidly growing core customer base. Jump has created a design that is consistent with the Chorizo brand, and a site structure that facilitates the technical requirements that Chorizo was looking for in a website. “We look forward to watching the Chorizo brand flourish with the new brand identity, and the website will be a big part of that” said Jump Director of Communications Kevin Hemsworth. “We know the product is good, but without a strong brand Chorizo was facing a challenge when expanding their operations. We’ve helped Frank to overcome some of those challenges, and are proud of this latest addition to the Chorizo stable of brand communications.”
